07/02/2018 Independence Day!
As we gather our families and take some time away from the office on this July 4th celebration of our countries independence, we at Folkerts Financial Strategies encourage you all to take a moment to think about the sacrifice our forefathers made when declaring independence on that momentous Thursday in Philadelphia in 1776. The signers of that document, composed by Thomas Jefferson, knew that this declaration of independence from the dictatorial rule of Great Britain might also be — literally — their death sentence. With the full wrath and might of Britain as a strong deterrent and facing overwhelming military and financial disadvantages these brave men boldly declared “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.” As we celebrate with our parades, fireworks and picnics, we at Folkerts urge you to think about what the holiday means to you and what sacrifices you are making to follow in the footsteps of those great men. As active members of the community having served on school boards, zoning committees and other outreach programs, Adam and I are committed to ensuring the spirit of sacrifice given to us on Independence Day is kept alive and we invite you to check out the volunteering page at Waverly Chamber of Commerce. http://www.waverlyia.com/chamber-of-commerce/about/get-involved.aspx
05/24/2018 Happy Memorial Day
For American Citizens, Memorial Day is one of the most significant days of the calendar. First observed in 1868 to honor all who lost their lives in the civil war, originally called “Decoration Day”, this day is celebrated on the last Monday of May every year. It is a day to commemorate and remember all service men and woman who died protecting our nation.
We at Folkerts Financial Strategies recognize that freedom has come with a heavy price for so many and we take the time now to recognize all our brave service men and women. We also remember our loved ones who have passed away but live on in our memories.
Happy Memorial Day from Kathy, Adam and Mike.
01/26/18 Tax season is upon us
As you prepare for the upcoming tax season be sure to wait for all your W-2’s, 1099’s etc. for your tax-preparer before setting an appointment
Today’s guidelines do not include having receipts by January 31st as was the case in the past. Many brokerage accounts and mutual funds have a mid-to-late March deadline. By waiting to be sure you have everything you need, you will avoid having to re-do your tax return.
Also remember that any contributions to an IRA you want to make for 2017 must be received prior to April 15. It would be best to complete prior to April 1. As usual you should consult with your tax advisor on these issues.
01/10/2018 Martin Luther King Jr. leaves a powerful legacy of service
As we celebrate the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday it is perhaps most poignant to draw on one his most enduring messages; “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is:
What are you doing for others?”. For Dr. King it was never enough to “talk the talk” and through his lifetime was able to “walk the walk” profoundly and purposefully in service to others. Monday’s celebration is a reminder to all to find ways to be of service to one another. Whether it be on a national stage, as part of a community or within the family, we at Folkerts Financial Strategies challenge all Iowans, with their proud history of service, to find a way to serve and make a difference on MLK Day.
